Many people, fond of precious and semi-precious stones, favour moonstone because of its shiny bluish colour and silvery sheen reminiscent of moonlight, which gave it his name. It is this mysterious reflection that gives this stone a special charm.
Moonstone or "Adularia", belongs to a group of feldspar and is one of the most available minerals in lapidary practice. It was first named for an early mining site at Mt. Adular in Switzerland. Moonstone has a unique attribute of colour known as adularescence. Adularescence is due to a diffusion of light and varying layers of orthoclase and albite within. This effect has a form of a floating light or sheen. Although his colours are those of moonlight, it can show multiple hues of colours like colourless, brown, purple, green, yellow, orange, pink, white, blue or gray. This colour comes from iron content.
Its hardness is 6 to 6.5 on Mohs scale.
If the stone is more transparent, more blue in its adularescence, the bigger the value will be. By far the most beautiful and valuable moonstones are those which are colourless, transparent and have a strong blue sheen. Such stones came from Burma but is mined out now and market prices are rising.
Moonstone has always been very popular and respected in India as a sacred stone. According to Hindu mythology, it has emerged from moon rays that became solid, so that is why its various hues and shimmering colours remind us of moonlight so. Among the Romans, the moonstone was also praised because it was believed that it was truly made of moonlight, and he had a significant role in jewellery making in ancient Rome as well.
This highly attractive gem has achieved great popularity in the early 20th century with Art Nouveau jewellery becoming an interesting detail in men`s neckties, rings, stickpins and on women`s rings, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings.
Moonstone is usually processed en cabochon because it brings its best glow to the fore, and it seems like this light is coming from somewhere deep in its midst. Since it is sensitive to impact, the cutter must be very careful and precise, and the desired lighting effect can be obtained only if the facets of the crystals are leveled towards the zenith of the stone.
Moonstone, as a stone of new beginnings, is associated with the moon and intuition.
It fits best to those born in the month of June.
