This semiprecious stone has a very long history. It was discovered at Knossos in Crete, in an archaeological site dating from the Bronze Age. The shape of the stone led scientists to believe that it was used in the decorative arts as early as 1800 BC. Sumerian and Egyptian craftsmen made jewellery from Carnelian stones, and the stone was highly valued by the Ancient Greeks and Romans too, who used it in the production of sealing rings or seals for stamping into wax, which were used in correspondence and for the verification of various important documents. It is interesting that Napoleon Bonaparte, during his conquest in Egypt, found an octagonal seal made from Carnelian in the battlefield, which he carried with him at all times as a talisman for good fortune...Read about Carnelian
